Allan Myers Receives National Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors for the South NIT Optimization Project
Allan Myers today announced work on the South Norfolk International Terminal (SNIT) Optimization Project – Stack Construction in Norfolk, VA has earned a national Excellence in Construction® Pyramid Award, presented during ABC Convention 2021 in Grapevine, Texas, on March 10. The EIC awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for world-class, safe and innovative construction projects.
“It is truly an honor for our SNIT Team to be recognized by the ABC with this award,” said Ross Myers, CEO, Allan Myers. “This project was a key part of the expansion plans at Port of Virginia (VPA) to meet the growing needs at the Port. We are pleased to have been part of this exceptional program.”
Allan Myers was selected by the VPA as the general contractor for the stack construction portion of the South NIT Optimization Project to reconfigure the container storage area into 30 stacks served by 60 new rail-mounted semi-automated overhead gantry cranes and two new ship-to-shore cranes. Work performed by Allan Myers included the installation of all underground utilities, milling, excavation, asphalt pavement, concrete retaining walls, permanent striping, electrical, and the steel and concrete infrastructure required to accommodate the rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes fitted by the Port. Each stack requires two RMGs to serve the water and land sides of the operation. The stack optimizations constructed over two and a half years provide more capacity, improve efficiency of cargo handling, create better gate access for trucking, and make activity within the container areas much safer.
“For more than 30 years, ABC has honored award-winning construction projects like SNIT because the work by the team at Allan Myers exemplifies excellence in our industry,” said 2021 ABC National Chair of the Board of Directors Steve Klessig, Vice President of Architecture and Engineering, Keller Inc., Kaukauna, Wisconsin. “This world-class construction project is a vital part of our economic engine, built safely, on time and under budget, and it is an honor to congratulate Allan Myers for their commitment to setting the standard for excellence in construction.”
The EIC award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.
This year’s panel included representatives from Building Owners and Managers Association International, Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America and various construction-related firms nationwide.
